Game Basics
As a new player to the game it is a good idea to get yourself familiar with the controls as soon as possible. You can view the list of in-game controls here. Also, it is a good idea to go through the tutorial which is located in the main menu for the game. You may also want to look over the FAQ for any questions that you might have.

New Game & Factions
When a player logs into a new server or starts a new solo game the first thing that you have to do is pick a Faction. There are currently four different factions in-game. Hurles Co., Galactic Trade Network, Sentinel Security Systems, and Drifters. Each of the factions has their own specialties and starter systems. When you start you are given a set amount of starting resources and your character is teleported into that faction's hub of operations. You can currently accept and complete missions for any faction.

Let's compare each of these faction choices:

style="width:20%;"| || style="background-color:#cedff2; width:20%;"| Hurles Co. |}
*The cost of starter ships can be adjusted by server admins, these are just the default values.

Each faction's base has some basic resources for a new player to use. Each has a Store-o-Tron to let you buy, store and repair ships, a Ship Editor Terminal to let you build your own ships, a Vault to allow you to store resources, and a Resource Extractor to let you mine. For Sentinel Security Systems and Galactic Trade, there are separate mining stations, as the home stations do not have asteroid fields around them. For specific resources check the links above for the different faction hubs. * Drifters are given materials instead of U-nits. With a little mining at the station you can construct your own ship at the Ship Editor Terminal.

Ship Creation
You can either buy your faction's ship from the Store-o-Tron once you get enough U-nits to buy it, or you can create a ship in the Ship Editor Terminal. In order to create a ship you must have the required resources for that ship in either the Vault or on cargo pads in another ship you own. For ship creation tutorials look here.

Entering Your Ship
You can enter ships by accessing your local teleporter or long range teleporter. Every station and ship has one if there is live-able compartments.

Missions
Once you have a ship, you can complete missions that are given in each of the faction hubs. Mission names may appear in white text for those which take place in the current solar system. When mission text is gold in color, you will need to open a rift to another system, and travel through it to complete your mission. When you accept a mission, a popup will help guide you, and you will receive a message with similar instructions, as well as the time left to complete the mission. You can press 'M' to open the Message Centre screen or navigate to the Message Centre in your G.R.I.P. OmniTool by pressing the 'Tab' key to review your objectives anytime. When you complete a mission in the time given, you will receive the currency and goods promised as well as gain reputation with that faction. You can view your current faction standings by pressing 'X' to bring up the Diplomacy Window, or press 'Tab' to navigate to it in your G.R.I.P. OmniTool.

Exploration
The galaxy is large and full of valuable resources waiting to be discovered. Some resources may be well guarded; you may have to fight for them against humanoid, alien or drone adversaries. Which star systems you visit, what you mine, whom you fight and what you salvage is your decision, but you may want to have some help. Your enemies will.

===Entering Your Ship===
You can press 'M' to open the Message Centre screen or navigate to the Message Centre in your [[G.R.I.P. ===New Game & Factions===

While we have an ask us anything policy, we realize that it sometimes may take a while before we reply to your question. So therefore we made a list of our most frequently asked questions for your convenience.
Q: What is Interstellar Rift
A: Interstellar Rift is a space simulation game where you can construct your own ship from the inside out and gather a crew of your closest friends or play solo to further your goals, In a procedurally generated galaxy.

Q: On what platform(s) will Interstellar Rift be available?
A: Interstellar Rift is currently slated for release on Windows PC.

Q: When will Interstellar Rift be released?
A: Interstellar Rift has been released on Steam Early Access on June 23rd, and is slated for a full release sometime later.

Q: Will I be able to play in single player?
A: Yes, however we are focusing on multiplayer for the alpha release, the single player game content is the same as multiplayer, but your game will not appear in the server list, so it will not have other players joining. We have plans for narrative driven missions however we will reveal more about those once we are closer to implementing them.

Q: Is Interstellar Rift an MMO?
A: Interstellar Rift is not an MMO, while there will be persistence for as long as a server is active and not reset, servers will be privately hosted by players themselves and we aim to support up to 64 players at a time, at launch. This number may increase later down the line.

Q: What are the system requirements?
A: Minimum and Recommended specs are as follows:
:MINIMUM:
* OS: Windows 7 or higher
* Processor: Intel Dual Core 2GHz
* Memory: 2048 MB RAM
* Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 440 or higher
* Network: Broadband Internet connection
* Hard Drive: 1 GB available space
* Additional Notes: OpenGL 3.3 or higher required

:RECOMMENDED:
* OS: Windows 7 or higher
* Processor: AMD or Intel Quad Core
* Memory: 4096 MB RAM
* Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 or higher
* Network: Broadband Internet connection
* Hard Drive: 5 GB available space
* Additional Notes: OpenGL 3.3 or higher required

You maybe be able to play the game on a system that does not meet the minimum requirements however we cannot guarantee that.

Q: Can I walk around inside my own ship?
A: Yes, you will be able to get up from the pilot seat and walk around the interior of your own custom starship while underway.

Q: What can I do inside my starship?
A: Ship Interior gameplay is an integral part of Interstellar Rift. You can take control of different ship systems, repair broken systems, use gun turrets, operate missile launchers, defend your ship from aliens and hostile boarders, trade with other players who you can teleport aboard, or just socialize with your crew.

Q: Can I attack other players and board their ship?
A: Yes, once you have disabled another player’s ship you can teleport aboard and raid it, you can even steal their ship if you manage to disable their ability to respawn and repair it’s engines. But the same can happen to you.

Q: Is this game a first person shooter?
A: The entire game is in first person. Boarding another player’s ship without permission can result in hostility which you can indeed resolve with the use of FPS gameplay mechanics. But the game is not focused around it’s first person shooter gameplay. Shooting another player is a choice not a requirement.

Q: How will I gather resources?
A: Ships can be equipped with resource extractors and refinery equipment, which can mine asteroids. In the future you may be able to harvest from gas giant’s, nebulae and more. You can also raid cargo from other players, stations or trade for different resources.

Q: Will I be able to build space stations?
A: Yes, if you have gathered enough materials to construct a station, you can build it on site, or with a cockpit and engines to fly to your launch location. You can provide power from solar panels and fix the position with a gravity anchor. The process is nearly identical to ship construction. You can use the ship editor terminal to customize it similar to how you construct a ship.

Q: What stops me from creating a kilometer long ship completely covered in guns that will own everything that gets near it?
A: Practicality. Every ship in Interstellar Rift requires power and oxygen, the bigger your ship, the higher the requirements. Projectile weapons require bullets and energy shields drain considerable power from the system. Opening a rift to travel to another star in such a ship would be incredibly expensive in resources. Nothing prevents you from creating a giant ship like that, but whether or not you can maintain it is the question.

Q: My ship was destroyed/stolen. What now?
A: You can purchase or build another ship. If you have the resources in your vault, you can build another ship from your stored blueprints at the ship editor terminal. Each of the starter stations also has the equipment to allow you to quickly gather resources. You can save the resources to build a ship yourself or sell them to purchase another ship already constructed at the Store-o-Tron.

Q: I have built this gorgeous ship, can I use it on other servers?
A: Yes and No, you can not use a ship on any other server but the one you built it on. However the blueprint for that ship is stored locally and will be available for you on every server you join. All you need to do is gather the materials again to build it. You can also share the blueprint files with others.

Q: How will space travel work?
A: There are 3 modes of space travel in Interstellar Rift:
* Sublight travel: This is your normal cruising speed. In this travel mode you will fight, mine and basically do everything. In this mode you will have direct control over you ship and where it flies.
* Warp Travel: Warp is your main mode of transport within a star system. It propels you faster than light and allows you to quickly travel around a star system. In this mode you will have minimal control over your ship.
* Hyperspace Jump: The hyperspace jump allows you to travel between different star systems instantly through a rift created by a rift generator. This is a point to point means of travel where the ship is slowly flown through the created rift to a different star system. You can still walk around inside the ship while the jump through a rift is occurring.

Q: Can I make videos using your game(s) and monetize them?
A: Yes, we encourage people to make video’s using Split Polygon game content. However the video must be free to access by everyone. You can not charge people to watch a video containing Split Polygon copyrighted materials. We also do not allow you to license these video’s out to other parties for payment of any kind. You are free to monetize your video using the Youtube partner program, or similar services. This policy only applies to Interstellar Rift and Split Polygon related materials, any other content you choose to include in your video will require permission from the owner. If you want this by e-mail confirmation please don't hesitate to ask.

This is a guide for setting up your own Interstellar Rift dedicated server on windows. If you have any questions or issues please reply to the steam thread here and the Developers will answer them as soon as possible. This guide is player made. It assumes you already know how to install the steam client and/or SteamCMD. It is based off the guide found here here
How to make a windows dedicated server
Step 1: Download the game

You have 2 options when trying to download the game. You can either download it via your Steam Client or you can use SteamCMD.

If you want to download it via SteamCMD the Steam AppID is 363360

Step 2: Make a shortcut to start your server

We will need to make a shortcut of IR.exe. It is usually located in the folder: Steam/SteamApps/common/Interstellar Rift/Build/IR.exe

Create a shortcut by right clicking IR.exe and selecting create shortcut

Right click the shortcut you just made and go to properties

Change the target to included -server at the end of it

example "Interstellar Rift\Build\IR.exe" -server

example2 click here to see an image of how it should look

example3 Make a Batch fill in the same folder as IR.exe, Added IR.exe -server to that batch file then run it.

Do Not close the steam client you made the SSK.txt. You must start your server at least once before you can close the steam client that you made the SSK.txt with or it will be invalid and you will have to make a new one

Step 3: Validating Your Server

You will need an SSK (Standalone Server Key) to allow your server to be validated. To get one open your IR client and go to Play Interstellar Rift > Host Game. Then click the "Generate SSK" key, like this

After that a file called SSK.txt will be generated in your Appdata folder at: *Your Drive*:/Users/*Your User*/AppData/Roaming/InterstellarRift/SSK.txt

As as shortcut to get there you can hit window key + R or click your window key this go to run and type %appdata% and hit enter. Then go to InterstellarRift/SSK.txt

Please note if you are running the server on another computer you will need to copy and the generated SSK.txt in appdata on your server and the it over to that computer.

This key will associate any servers with it to the Steam account you generated it with; It will be valid for a maximum of 30 days and may be used in as many server instances as you'd like once it is associated.

If your client was exited please generate a new key.

Step 4: Configuring Your Server

In that same folder as that SSK.txt is stored in (*Your Drive*:/Users/*Your User*/AppData/Roaming/InterstellarRift/) you will find a file called server.json. If you do not see that file you should see config.xml. This is your config file

Right click on it and go to open with and select notepad.

Lastly edit what you would like and then save and close it

Note: After you start your server once your will need to use the server.json file as your confing file.

If you change the starting ship in the server.json file the Store-o-Tron will still show the factions' starter ships rather then the new ship you put in.

Linux Info (Incomplete)
Running a Linux server is nut currently supported, and there are no known active Linux servers at this time.
If you'd like to try your luck, you'll need to run it in WINE with this argument:

Quote from the developers:

CommandLineArgs.Contains("-inline")

Developer: you would have to run it through wine, thats [sic] all i know, not really my part of the code.
Troubleshooting and Errors
Error Message
Description
How to Fix
announcing server to masterserver: invalid steam ticket
This means your SSK is not valid
Repeat Step 3.
Warning > No devices found which means the network is broken or there is no UPnP/PMP capable router OR UPNP: Failed to add mapping!
This means your router was not able to forward the Server's port automatically, or it does have such a function to do so.
If you are getting this message it will not away. Just make sure your ports are forwarded and you shouldn't have any issues.
